Weather Balloons Utilized to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Closed Vilnius Airport

Recovered contraband balloons
A minimum of 11 of the weather balloons, transporting 18,000 packages of illegal cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.

Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."

To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.

Smuggling Techniques

In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."

International Concerns

The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.

Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
